against sites in the Gaza Strip. Earlier this week Israeli Defense Minister
Shaul Mofaz issued the order for an upping of Israeli military moves against
those Palestinians who are firing Qassam and other rockets from Gaza into
Israel. Despite the Israeli naval-, air- and land-based assaults, Palestinians

landed just south of the major city Ashqelon on Friday.
2. THIRD
EGYPTIAN DIES FROM BIRD FLUcCairo has confirmed a third Egyptian female has died
after coming into contact with poultry infected with the deadly H5N1 strain of
bird flu. The 16 year old died in northern Egypt just a day after being admitted
to a local hospital. The World Health Organization is of the opinion that bird
flu will have limited effects on the Middle Eastern population because on the
whole the governments have the wherewithal to deal with the matter and the
people are sufficiently educated to listen to messages from the authorities.
However, the WHO is concerned that parts of Africa adjoining the Arab world will
be less capable of dealing with the spread of the disease.
3. IRAN, U.S. TO TALK IN BAGHDADcIranian and
United States officials are expected to hold direct official talks in the next
few weeks on the future of Iraq. The sides have been using back channels in
recent weeks to discuss the possibility of a face-to-face meeting. Both parties
believe Tehran has sufficient sway over the Shi'ite population of Iraq,
predominantly in the south, to perhaps bring about some form of reduction in
violence in the war-torn country. Ties have warmed between Tehran and
Baghdad with the fall of Saddam Hussein and the victories of Shi'ites in recent
elections.
