Immigration
Rallies Or Democrat Rallies?
Were those pro-amnesty rallies
cross the U.S. yesterday or gatherings of the Democrat Party and its left-wing
allies? The demonstration in New York featured Senator Hillary Clinton, who not
long ago told ABC News, gI am, you know, adamantly against illegal immigrants.h
But, yesterday she was singing a different tune saying to a roaring crowd of
illegal immigrants and their supporters, gYour faces are the faces of
America.h
Here in Washington, the speaker that charged up the crowd the
most was Senator Edward Kennedy, who screamed himself hoarse in attacks on
conservatives and the rule of law. At all the rallies there were posters and
fliers, predominately for Democrat candidates, as well as voter registration
booths. Needless to say, proof of citizenship was not being requested before
people registered.
A variety of immigrant-rights groups and Hispanic
lobbying organizations ? virtually all of them left-leaning -- have organized
the rallies. One major force at the demonstrations has been gANSWERh (Act Now to
Stop War and End Racism), a far Left fringe group with very questionable ties.
ANSWER was founded three days after the September 11th attacks and describes
itself as:
ga coalition of hundreds of organizations and prominent
individuals and scores of organizing centers in cities and towns across the
country that have campaigned against U.S. intervention in Latin America, the
Caribbean, the Middle East and Asiac and for civil rights and for social and
economic justice for working and poor people inside the United
States.h
It and other left-wing groups have called for yet another day of
protests on May 1st and have urged their supporters to not work, go to school or
engage in any economic activity on that day. Members of Congress, particularly
Republicans, should resist the temptation to cave-in to mass street protests
being organized by the political Left!
Terror Risk In
Amnesty?
Janice Kephart is the former counsel to the September
11 Commission, and she has been delivering a strong warning on Capitol Hill
about how amnesty for illegal immigrants would increase our risks of terrorism.
She and other experts are pointing out that at least five terrorists used the
1986 amnesty law to stay in the U.S., and then went on to attack the U.S.,
including three of the 1993 World Trade Center bombers, and Aimal Kasi, the
jihadist who killed two CIA employees outside the agencyfs headquarters in
Langley, Virginia. Speaking of amnesty, Ms. Kephart says, gWe are just asking
for trouble, having a program like that at the moment.h
Back On
Offense
The liberal media is spinning the immigration debate into a
one-sided story with pre-determined gwinners,h like Senator Ted Kennedy and
congressional Democrats, and clearly defined glosers,h like President Bush and
congressional Republicans. I have a suggestion: Rather than digging in for
trench warfare, why not work on issues that unite both sides?
We should
start with the English Language Unity Act. As Rep. Steve King of Iowa, the
billfs sponsor, noted, gEnglish is the language of opportunity in America.
Learning English opens doors to better jobs and opportunities...The only way to
fully learn about American culture, and what makes America truly unique, is
through our common bond of the English language.h
Polling on the issue
suggests there is broad support for making English our official language. One
recent Zogby poll found that 84% of Americans want English to be our official
language. That figured included 91% of Republicans, 82% of Democrats, 77% of
Independents, and even 71% of Hispanics! Rep. Kingfs bill currently has 142
Republican co-sponsors, but only five Democrats are on board so far.
